The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) combines Northeastern University’s signature approach to experiential learning with liberal arts education, interdisciplinary research, and community engagement, both locally and globally.

The College comprises 17 academic units, including two schools, seven departments, and eight interdisciplinary programs, as well as 15 research centers and institutes. Responsibilities:

The Global Asian Studies Program Northeastern University announces two 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowships in, respectively, Asian Studies and Asian American Studies to begin July 1, 2025. Specialization may be in any area of Asian Studies and Asian American Studies in disciplines of social sciences or humanities. We welcome projects in any field or period that connect critical questions in Asian Studies or Asian American Studies to global, diasporic, postcolonial, and/or transpacific dynamics. We are especially interested in applicants with specialties in the following subfields that engage with the University’s research foci: science and technology; environmental studies; health/medical humanities; race and social justice; and/or digital humanities. The Postdoctoral Fellows will have access to a mentor and have one writing workshop presentation and session with faculty from across the university.

The fellowship offers the successful candidate a unique platform for professional advancement: financial and material support for independent research; the ability to develop substantive interdisciplinary teaching expertise; and the opportunity to play an instrumental role in nurturing the growing digital humanities community at Northeastern University.

This is a full-time benefits eligible position with an annual salary of $65,000. You will receive mentoring and clerical support, in addition to $5,000 annually for research and travel expenses.

This fellowship combines research and teaching and is designed to support fellows in developing both their teaching skills and their research programs. Fellow are expected to participate in the intellectual life of the Global Asian Studies Program, the College, and the University, such as the Humanities Center seminar series. The Postdoctoral Fellows will teach one class during the first year and one class during the second year. One course will be a Global Asian, Asian, and/or Asian American studies survey course or another undergraduate course that will attract a broad audience. Postdoctoral fellows will present their work to the Global Asian Studies community and will teach cross-listed courses for departments and units relevant to their respective disciplines. Fellows will conduct and publish research that explores the implications of humanities research paradigms and submit a revised manuscript for a book manuscript workshop in their second year.

Qualifications:

  • Qualified applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field between May 2021 and May 2025 and have college or university teaching experience.
  • Experience and comfort with interdisciplinarity is required, with ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse populations.
  • Must possess strong analytical skills.
  • Must be willing to work both collaboratively and independently.

All applications should include a letter of interest (cover letter), curriculum vita, five-page project proposal, a writing sample of no more than twenty-five pages, a one-page proposal for an undergraduate course (other than the introductory course), and three letters of recommendation.

The cover letter should include a diversity statement. In the diversity statement, applicants should describe how they can support CSSH's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Applicants can provide specific examples of initiatives they have led or participated in that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This could include organizing events or programs, implementing policies or practices, serving on committees, or creating spaces that foster a sense of belonging for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
