We produced a professional development science communication (SciComm) session at the 2020 annual conference of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). At this first virtual conference, our #SACNAS2020 session was:
Funny Science Communication: Reaching the Public with Humor and Memes
Humor can make science communication stand out and stay memorable for reaching the general public. Learn from two funny SciComm experts who use cartoons (PhDcomics.com) and TikTok memes (@lab_shenanigans) to educate and to laugh. A social scientist will also present their research on emotion, humor, & the science of #SciComm to put this type of communication outreach within a scholarly context.
Attendees will learn:
- about SciComm outreach using comics/art, movies, online videos, and social media;
- how science concepts are tailored for a funny message;
- what possible career options exist for scientists who are also artists using their theatrical or drawing skills; and
- how social scientists conduct their research specifically in the area of communication.
Find at end the #SACNAS2020 and #FunnySciComm Tweets.
